     Aluminum hydroxide is a filler material with largest dosage in inorganic flame retardants and mainly used in epoxy resin, unsaturated polyester resin, polyurethane silicone resin and chloroprene resin as well as thermoplastic plastics, such as PE, PP, ABS and rigid PVC. As a flame retardant, aluminum hydroxide can not only retard flame and suppress smoke but also capture harmful gas. Different from some organic additive flame retardant, it will not generate any corrosive combustion product and not evaporate and exude out of the polymer. Meanwhile, with the presence of crystal water, it can also endow antistatic function to the polymer products. With the replacement of the traditional aluminum hydroxide powder with aluminum hydroxide nanofiber, the flame retarding performance is strengthened and at the same time, the strength and toughness of high polymer are improved and enhanced as well. The production technology of aluminum hydroxide nanofiber provides a simple and economical industrialized production technology and resolves the technical problem of powder ultra-fining, particle single-scattering and particle shape control in existing aluminum hydroxide production, thus the product purity can be controlled as required, generally above 99.99% and the particle shape can be controlled as sphere shape and fiber shape, with the particle diameter of the fiber-shaped particle less than 10 nm and the major diameter of the fiber-shaped particle within a range of 3-30. This project integrates anti-rigid glomeration of particles, particle shape control and particle size control into a whole. Therefore, the products are of adjustability in particle shape, particle size and grain fineness distribution to a certain extent. No pollution will be caused during the production.
    Flame retardant is the main development direction of aluminum hydroxide in future, and inorganic flame retardant is conspicuously gorgeous for its outstanding advantages of low toxicity, low smoke or smoke-resistance, low corrosion and its reasonable price, but the relatively large additive amount limits its application. In recent two years, as the requirement of non-halogenated flame retardants becomes increasingly higher, some new inorganic flame retardants are launched continuously in the foreign market, especially the development of the surface treatment technology outstands these inorganic flame retardants. For example, in recent years, the consumption of aluminum hydroxide as a flame retardant (including new type with improved surface) always increases at a relatively high speed and the ratio of it in the total consumption of flame retardants increased from 30% between 1972 and 1977 to nearly 50% in 1984 which is still maintained till now. Other inorganic flame retardants with promising prospect include surface modified magnesium hydroxide, novel zinc borate and microencapsulated red phosphorus.
    In the first decade of 21 century, the global flame retardant industry will maintain a steady development trend which may be slightly higher or equal to that in 1990s, i.e. the annual average growth rate will not exceed 4% generally. The main development trend of the flame retardant in the following ten years: halogen flame retardant (including halogen phosphate ester) will be used continuously and the dosage may increase slightly. However, the product structure will be adjusted to some extent. People will treat polybrominated diphenyl ether and the like prudentially. Nitrogen phosphorus intumescent flame retardant and nitrogen-based flame retardant will further develop and be favored by consumers. Nontoxic and smoke-resistant halogen-free inorganic flame retardants, such as modified aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and zinc borate, in particular magnesium hydroxide that may be used in relatively high temperature, will be further developed. Smoke suppressants will have a promising market prospect. In addition, the field of flame retardants is calling for more laws and standards.
